What is the Indiana Family Supports Waiver?
Families caring for a loved one with an intellectual or developmental disability (I/DD) in Indiana often face an overwhelming mix of responsibilities, emotions, and financial strain. The Family Supports Waiver (FSW) is a Medicaid-funded program designed to help. It gives families the tools and funding to support their loved ones at home or in community settings — not in institutions.
At Kompassionate Care Services, we believe in independence, safety, and support for every family. As a licensed, bonded, insured, and veteran-owned agency based in Indianapolis, we help individuals access and benefit from Indiana Medicaid waiver programs like the FSW. Here’s what you need to know.
What Does the Family Supports Waiver Provide?
The Family Supports Waiver gives individuals with I/DD access to home and community-based services that promote independence and improve quality of life. The focus is on building skills, supporting caregivers, and enabling individuals to live with dignity in familiar environments.
Services funded by the FSW may include:
- Respite care (relief for family caregivers)
- Personal assistance with daily activities
- Behavior support
- Day programs and community-based habilitation
- Speech, occupational, and physical therapy
- Transportation to medical or community activities
- Job coaching or pre-vocational services
- Assistive technology and adaptations
- Case management
The current annual budget limit for FSW participants is $19,614 (Current as of April 2025. This amount may change based on state updates).
Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for the Family Supports Waiver in Indiana, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a resident of Indiana
- Be Medicaid eligible or able to become eligible
- Have a documented intellectual or developmental disability
- Meet the level of care typically provided in an intermediate care facility (ICF/IID)
- Be willing to receive services at home or in a community-based setting
Children and adults may qualify, and there is no age restriction.
Is There a Waitlist?
Yes, Indiana’s Family Supports Waiver often has a waiting list due to high demand. However, families may qualify sooner if they meet certain priority criteria (such as caregiver age or emergencies). In more complex situations, some may be transferred to the Community Integration and Habilitation Waiver (CIH), which offers a higher level of services.
